Food Photography for Zeitouna: A Mediterranean Feast in Mesa's Eastmark

There's nothing quite like being one of the first people to see, and taste, what a new restaurant is bringing to the Valley. As a Phoenix food photographer, I recently had the pleasure of photographing the menu for Zeitouna, a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurant opening soon in the Eastmark neighborhood of Mesa, Arizona, at the corner of Ellsworth and Elliot.

Zeitouna means "olive" in Arabic, and that spirit of warmth and abundance runs through everything they're building. Their menu is rooted in the flavors of the Levant and Mesopotamia, family recipes, generational cooking, and the kind of hospitality that turns a meal into a gathering. My job was to capture that feeling before the doors even open.

Photographing a table built for sharing

For the hero shot, we styled a full spread the way Zeitouna intends it to be experienced: everyone reaching in at once. Golden cheese and beef burek, crisp spanakopita, creamy hummus and baba ghanoush finished with olive oil and pomegranate, bright tabbouleh, fattoush, labneh, falafel, charred shish tawook, kabobs hot off the grill, and a slow-cooked lamb shank over saffron rice. Overhead food photography like this is all about layering, color, texture, and negative space working together so every dish gets its moment while the table still feels alive.

We even worked a phone into the frame, mid-photo of the shish tawook, because that's how people eat now, and because a restaurant's food has to look as good on a guest's camera roll as it does on the menu.

Letting the grill be the star

The second look went darker and moodier: Zeitouna's grilled lamb chops, glistening with char marks, plated against black ceramic with marinated olives and feta, warm pita, and glasses of red and white wine behind them. Dramatic, low-key restaurant photography like this is my favorite way to shoot proteins, the deep shadows make the sear and the caramelization do all the talking. It's the kind of image that makes someone stop scrolling and make a reservation.

Why professional restaurant photography matters before opening day

For a new restaurant, launch photos do a lot of heavy lifting. They fill the website, the online menu, Google Business Profile, social media, press outreach, and delivery platforms, often months before a single guest walks through the door. Great food photography builds appetite and trust before the first plate is ever served. I loved collaborating with the Zeitouna team to build an image library that captures both their food and their story.

If you're in the East Valley, keep an eye on Zeitouna at Ellsworth and Elliot in Mesa, and bring your appetite. Between the mezze, the mana'eesh, and the masgouf, this is going to be a special addition to the Valley's dining scene.
