Graduation Photography for Cummings Graduate Institute: Celebrating New Doctors of Behavioral Health

Some milestones deserve more than a phone snapshot. When the Cummings Graduate Institute for Behavioral Health Studies (CGI) held its latest commencement, I had the honor of serving as their graduation photographer, capturing the day a group of dedicated healthcare professionals officially became Doctors of Behavioral Health.

CGI, based in Tempe, Arizona, trains working professionals to deliver integrated, whole-person healthcare, and many of its graduates balanced careers, families, and doctoral coursework to reach this stage. You could feel that in the room. These weren't just caps and gowns — they were years of late nights finally paying off, and my job was to make sure every one of those moments was preserved.

Two sides of graduation photography

Commencement coverage really comes in two parts, and this shoot included both.

First, the formal graduate portraits. We set up a lighting station against CGI's branded step-and-repeat backdrop and photographed each graduate in their white coat, diploma in hand. Consistent studio-quality lighting matters here: every graduate receives a polished, professional portrait they can frame, share with family, and use on LinkedIn, and the institution gets a matching set for its website, alumni pages, and marketing.

Second, the ceremony itself, which is pure event photography. Speakers at the podium, the hooding of new doctors, honor cords and stoles, proud families applauding, and the unguarded laughter between friends who survived a doctoral program together. These candid moments can't be posed or repeated, so anticipation and positioning are everything. You learn to read a room: who's about to tear up, who's about to hug, where the light falls when a graduate turns to face the audience.

Why schools and universities invest in professional commencement photography

For institutions like CGI, graduation photos work hard long after the ceremony ends. They become the imagery for admissions marketing, alumni spotlights, social media, newsletters, and press, authentic proof of student success that no stock photo can replicate. And for the graduates, these images mark one of the biggest achievements of their lives. Delivering a gallery that serves both audiences is what commencement photography is all about.

Congratulations to CGI's newest Doctors of Behavioral Health, it was a privilege to document your big day.
